Waste from horses, cattle, goats, sheep, and other farm animals is generally safe for composting. However, dog and cat waste is best avoided, especially if the compost is to

be used in growing spaces designated for food production.

At Axe & Root Homestead, all maples on the property are tapped for sap to be boiled into syrup. This includes sugar maples, silver maples, and Norway maples.

This map illustrates all of the elements included on a sample quarter-acre (0.1-ha) homestead. Once all items are accounted for, the map is divided into zones. Zones with lower numbers indicate areas that are visited most often. Higher numbered regions are those with less daily traffic. By grouping objects together based on the frequency in which they are accessed, a more efficient homestead design can be achieved. This also allows some portions of the property to be more inviting to local wildlife as they host less daily traffic.
