THE REAL THING
Many cookware on the market are sold as GRANITE, but the truth is that these are aluminum pans with a PTFE (i.e. Teflon) coating imitating stone. Cookstone’s cookware is made of pure soapstone, no coatings.
Our cookware is unique and made to last a lifetime. Many people in Brazil and all over the world still cook with the soapstone pans they inherited from their grandparents.

ONE TIME SEASONING
Before you start cooking, soapstone cookware must be properly prepared. Seasoning is carried out only in the beginning and does not need to be repeated. Unlike cast iron, soapstone doesn’t rust. Instructions for this quick and easy process are included in each box.
Once the treatment has been completed, the stone will change its hue from grey to charcoal black, still showing the beautiful natural patterns of the stone. You may grease and heat the cookware once again if you prefer a deeper hue. Daily use and contact with food will eventually darken the stone. If you choose to preserve the original grey color, sand it with a fine grade sandpaper after use.

AN ANCIENT TRADITION
Steatite, due to its malleability and resistance, has been used from time immemorial. It seems to have been employed since the Bronze Age, not as cookware but to make moulds for bronze casting. Later on it was used by several cultures to manufacture jars for storing oils. Its use in the manufacturing of pots by the ancient Reti civilization is mentioned by Ovid, who called them “lebetes” in Latin. This term became the Italic word “lavet” and then the modern Italian “laveggio”.
This soapstone cookware, mostly hooped with copper or wrought iron, was extensively used by families in northern Italy. It was often the only piece of cookware used to cook almost any food.
At the time of Colonial Brazil, this heritage came to the region of Ouro Preto, in the State of Minas Gerais, where skilled craftsmen keep the ancient tradition of making soapstone cookware alive. Due to its unique features, this completely natural product remains an ideal cooking tool to this day.
HOW OUR PASSION FOR SOAPSTONE COOKWARE BEGAN
Like most Italians, I’ve always enjoyed cooking. Since I settled down in Brazil in 1990, I have been using a wonderful tool for almost all my recipes: soapstone cookware. At that time I couldn’t imagine that besides being my favorite utensil, soapstone cookware would become my core business in a not so distant future. I established my import-export company in 1991 and traded many different products since then. At the turn of the century, on a trip to Italy, I stumbled upon a fair demand for this cookware, which I thought was a typical Brazilian ware. I was surprised to know that soapstone pans were produced on a fairly large scale in northern Italy since the late Middle Ages. The “laveggi” made by local craftsmen were widely renowned and even exported to neighboring regions. I resolved to test the market, and the demand was so big I soon had to set up my own plant. Since then we have spread our products all over the world, working with many top-notch distributors and retailers such as Pentole Agnelli in Italy and Neiman Marcus in the USA.

A UNIQUE DEEP DISH PIZZA PAN — Made from pure soapstone, the oldest and healthiest cooking material, your best choice to make the perfect Chicago style deep dish pizza at home in your own oven. The smooth stone distributes and retains heat better than metal, and it’s naturally non-stick, even without oil. Finished with shiny copper handles, the Cookstone Deep Dish Pizza Pan brings out the best in your pizza – and looks great doing it too!
THE HEALTHIEST COOKING MATERIAL — NO COATINGS, JUST PURE STONE: No harmful substances are ever released into your pizza. Immune to the corrosive effects of acidic and alkaline foods, soapstone doesn’t alter its composition nor change the taste of food.
HEAVY DUTY — Soapstone is highly heat resistant and can withstand extreme temperatures up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. It will not degrade from heating or flake from reheating. The copper handles provide a firm grip so you can safely lift your pizza pan and easily carry it to the dining table.
EASY TO CLEAN — Soapstone is nonporous and has a natural non-stick property that prevents food from sticking to it. Even if some stubborn food residue does stick to its surface, it can be easily removed. Just pour warm water on the stone, let it soak for about ten minutes, and any residue will come off by simply wiping it off with a sponge.
IT WILL NEVER CRACK IN YOUR OVEN as cordierite stones often do. Treat it as hard as you want, put it in a preheated or cold oven, wash it by hand or in the dishwasher, soapstone can take it all. Just let it cool down to room temperature before washing, to avoid thermal shocks.
NO FOUL SMELLS are ever released while baking your pizza. It’s just pure soapstone, no chemicals in it.
NATURALLY NON-STICK: Your dough will never stick to the surface of the stone, your pizza will heat evenly and come off easily. — DOES NOT STAIN like cheap cordierite pizza stones. Your Cookstone pizza stone will look just like it did the first time you used it.
MULTIPURPOSE SERVING TRAY — Heat it up in the oven or freeze it in the refrigerator and use it as a serving tray. Soapstone will keep hors d’oeuvres, snacks or sweets warm and cheese, charcuterie or seafood cold. It is also a great choice for anything you might want to bake in the oven.
HANDMADE IN BRAZIL with recycled material. We buy the leftovers of block cutting from mining companies, transforming into valuable objects what would otherwise become environmental waste.
CAUTION: To avoid thermal shock and cracking, use the pizza pan only in the oven. Do not place it on a direct flame. To avoid scratching the surface of the stone, use scissors instead of the pizza wheel.
