From the Publisher
Includes Step-by-Step Illustrations (like these instructions for double-digging)!
Step One
First, spread an inch or so of compost over the entire garden surface. Working in a line the length of your garden, remove the top layer of soil and compost, creating a trench the depth of your spade. Put the soil in a wheelbarrow or on a tarp nearby.
Step Two
Standing in the trench you have just dug, plunge a spading fork into the lower layer of soil. Wiggle and rock the fork to loosen the soil. Better still, buy a broadfork, which is a wide fork with double handles. To use it, insert the tines into the soil, push down on the fork with your foot, and pull back on the handles—this simple action loosens the soil without turning it over.
Step Three
Start the next trench beside the first. This time, when you remove the top layer of soil, drop it into the first trench you created, breaking up the clods as much as possible. Again, use the spading fork or broadfork to loosen the lower soil. Keep trenching and loosening the lower layer of soil until you have reached the end of your garden. Then fill in the final trench with the soil you reserved in the wheelbarrow or on the tarp.
From the Introduction
“One reason to grow flowers organically: You’re growing them at your home, in the place where your children play, where you entertain friends, where you yourself come for solace and respite. A flower garden should be a place that nourishes your soul, not a place where you have to feel cautious and tense. In the organic flower garden, you will be free to enjoy your flowers with all your senses, and to experience the true joy of gardening that comes from working as a partner with nature. . . . With flowers, familiarity is sure to lead to love. And with the right heart, anyone can grow beautiful flowers.”
