Container Gardening: What to Grow?

Utilizing containers is an easy way to start gardening or expand your growing space! With a little planning, almost anything can thrive in a pot that can be grown in the ground. Here are a few options to get you started.

11

VEGETABLES

Lettuce, spinach, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, squashes, potatoes, and many more of your favorite vegetables will grow well in containers. The secret is to tend to each plant’s needs. For example, salad greens do well with only 3 to 5 hours of sunlight a day, while other edible crops require as much sun as possible. Also, take care when planting different varieties together in one pot to ensure compatibility and room to grow!

22

FLOWERS

A container blooming with a well-planned arrangement of flowers is a showstopper in any landscape. When designing a flowering pot, consider planting by a color theme or playing with textures and dimensions. Some simple rules apply: Group plantings by sun requirements, water needs, and growing pace—and always buy the healthiest plants that you can find!

33

HERBS

Growing herbs in pots is easy, low-maintenance, and so satisfying! Depending on the variety, they can be slipped in with other edibles, planted in smaller containers, or combined to create the perfect kitchen herb garden. Enjoy making mixed drinks? Consider a bartender’s garden with mint for mojitos, lavender to infuse light spirits, or lemon verbena for a crisp lemondrop martini.
